Dear Nell, the bee came aboard off the Canaries, which I'd not have believed if Mr Greaves hadn't caught it in his hat. It rode in the bread locker for three days and then went to work on the pots I keep on the poop deck, ignoring the salt entirely. You'll think me soft, but I have forty-one pansies alive out here, which is forty more than the captain thought possible.

The little rose you sent in your last letter is the one I worry for. It sulks in the wind and drops its petals across the cabin floor every time we run into weather. I've taken to talking to it the way Mother read to us from that picture book, the one where the princess lies under the briars for a hundred years while the whole castle nods off around her. I used to think it the saddest thing I'd ever read. Now I think it was about patience, and about the brambles having the decency to wait.

Last night the sea went flat as a plate and the moon laid itself across the water. I sat by the lilac pansies and the purple ones, and an orange butterfly, bright as a marigold, came down on the rail and stayed. I didn't move. I didn't want to frighten it off.

Write back soon. Tell the robin in the yard I'm sorry I missed his spring. Tell Mother the pansies look like faces when the light's low, and that they are, in fact, all asleep.
