Green succulent with purple buds on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A green succulent rosette, similar to an echeveria, sits at the centre of the design with two purple buds and small green leaves around it. Black outlines define the petals, and the green shading is soft with touches of pink and yellow at the leaf tips. The design sits on the upper arm and is framed against a plain background with a white top at the edge of the frame.

The well at Hollin Reach had given up its last cup of water in the third dry summer, and the steward came up the goat track with his boots full of grit and his jug empty. Mother Venn was waiting at her door as though she had sent for him. She had a clay pot on the sill, and in it sat a rosette plant, green and tight as a closed fist, its leaves stacked like the scales of a fish.

Give me water, the steward said, and I will pay you for it. She laughed at him and pinched a single leaf from the pot, then pressed it into his palm. It was cool and heavy and full, as if it had been filled from a river. The plant keeps its own rain, she said. Every leaf is a cistern. Take the lesson home or go thirsty.
The steward did not take the lesson home. He took the pot, and the queen had it set on the throne room table so the court could admire it. Within a month the palace gardeners had cut the rosettes apart, pressed their leaves into the dry hills, and built cisterns with petal-shaped walls to catch the storms that came off the high rock. Some of the courtiers mocked the plants for their slow, stubborn growth.
By autumn the rains came back. On the morning the first cistern overflowed, the steward walked out to the hill where the old woman's cottage had stood and found only a stone sill in the dust. Beside it, two purple buds had opened, as if someone had been keeping them warm all along.
