Slice of Life lettering with red splatter on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the words SLICE of LIFE in black lettering, with the word of set in a larger, looping script-like letter. Red splatter marks surround and overlap the text, drawn with soft, uneven edges. The lettering is centred on the inner wrist against a dark background, photographed straight on.

Sit nearer the range, all of you, and mind the dog. This is the winter the Pell brothers fell out over a sow called Duchess and a pot of damson jam. Nobody on Carrow Farm had ever seen a feud over preserves, but Walter Pell swore the jam was their mother's recipe and Edwin swore it was his, and by Candlemas they weren't speaking across the yard.

The trouble came to a head at the school harvest supper, where the judges were the vicar and Mrs Ruddock from the shop, neither of whom could tell a damson from a sloe. Walter had spent a week stirring his pot at the back of the range and singing hymns to it. Edwin, sly as a stoat, had stirred his with a sprig of rowan he'd pinched from the churchyard hedge. When the vicar cut into the pies, red juice ran across the trestle like a thing alive, and Walter stood up and called his brother the worst kind of thief.
Here is the part they never tell right. The vicar wiped his knife on his sleeve and said, "Gentlemen, this is the most honest thing anyone's served me in twenty years. A slice of life, with the life still in it." The room laughed, and Walter laughed, and the brothers went out into the frost together to fetch the pony, which had got into the hedge and was dripping damson from its lips.
Which is why, to this day, nobody on Carrow will ask whose jam is whose. They just pass the bread.
