Love Life script on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line script tattoo reading Love Life across the inside of a wrist. The lettering is drawn in thin, even strokes with a looping, handwritten style, and the ink appears white or very pale against the skin. The image is taken straight on with soft light, and the wrist fills the frame against a white fabric background.

The quill was the only thing Emrys Bell ever kept clean. He dipped it in the white size each morning before the shutters went up in Penmorfa, and by the time the fish cart reached the square he had already written the day's first word on somebody's window.

That spring Dilys Rhys climbed the hill with a tin of lamp black and asked him to letter her husband's new tackle shop. She wanted two words across the glass, LOVE LIFE, in the looping hand he used for the chapel texts. He told her a tackle shop sold hooks, not sentiment, and that the chapel paid better. She said she would wait. She sat on his step until the light changed, then went home with the tin still under her arm.
He could not sleep that week. On the Thursday he walked down to the harbour with a pot of the white paint used for lines on the slipway and wrote the words in a thin running hand across the first stone of the quay wall, where the boats came in. He worked until the tide was lapping the bottom steps. Nobody came to watch, and nobody asked him to.
In the morning the gulls had walked through the wet letters and the rain had softened their edges, but the words held. Dilys came down with her husband and read them aloud, slowly, as if they were a bill. Emrys took his quill and his pot home and never again charged for a line of script. The quay wall still says it, fainter every winter, and the children point at it and trace the loops with their fingers.
