Black and grey flash drawing of a sloth holding two hatched banners reading NAP ALL DAY, SLEEP ALL NIGHT and PARTY NEVER, in a traditional style.

Sloth holding banners with slogan

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A cartoon sloth hangs against three stacked banners whose wording reads NAP ALL DAY, SLEEP ALL NIGHT and PARTY NEVER. The sloth has a simple face with heavy outlines and dotted shading, and its arms wrap around the banners. The drawing uses solid black ink with fine hatched lines on the banner ends and shading, and the composition is centred on a white background.

Dear Mr Pringle, I am writing to report that the sloth has been living in the postbox again. Not the sloth in the photograph on your desk, the real one who came over on the Tuesday ferry in a crate marked FRAGILE, UP, and who has since declined to get out of it. I have tried everything. I rang the bell, I shouted through the slot, I left a parcel of ripe mangoes on the step, which he ate in roughly the time it took me to find my glasses. Yesterday he hung from the flagpole by one arm for the entire afternoon and watched the gulls with the expression of a man who has been promised a biscuit and is still waiting.

The islanders have taken his side, naturally. Mrs Gorse has knitted him a hammock out of the parish council's bunting, and the boys from the harbour bar have painted three banners across the bus shelter that say NAP ALL DAY, SLEEP ALL NIGHT and PARTY NEVER, which he considers a manifesto. Nobody has actually been able to read the banners aloud without yawning, so the council has voted to leave them up as a public service.

I write, Mr Pringle, because the Royal Mail is not a lounge. Please send a replacement postmaster, or failing that a crowbar. The sorting is three weeks behind and I have stopped pretending to be surprised. If you do come, do not wake him. He has asked, quite politely, through his teeth, that nobody do that.

Yours in exhaustion, H. Calloway, Postmaster, Little Skerry
