Flatline heartbeat with SLEEP FOREVER lettering
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single black ECG trace rises in one spike on the left, then continues as a flat line to the right. The words SLEEP FOREVER sit centred beneath it in bold serif capitals. The linework is thin and even, set against a plain mid-grey background with no skin visible.

Dear Tom,

The foghorn stopped on Tuesday, and nobody in Porthgarrow has known what to do with their hands since. Mrs Penhale kept baking for a day and a half before she realised there was no one left on the quay to feed. Your father would have laughed at us, standing about on the breakwater like gulls with nothing to pick at.
Dennis Pascoe still runs the chart recorder up at the coastguard hut, though there is nothing much to chart now that the Mary Ellen is tied up for good. He let me sit with him on Wednesday. The pen scratched its thin black line across the paper, slow and even, the way it had done since before you were born. Then he showed me the afternoon the boat came round the point in a bad swell. There was one sharp spike where the sea caught her, and after that the trace ran flat as a rule across the sheet, right to the edge where the paper was cut.
I asked him whether the machine had failed. He said no, that was simply the record of a boat that had stopped moving, and the pen had done exactly what it was built to do. I took the strip home anyway, folded it twice and put it in the tin with your father's spare lighthouse keys. I thought you should know that the spike is the part that looks important, but it is the long quiet after it that the paper keeps.
Come home when you can. The foghorn will not be back, but the kettle still is.
Your loving mother, Joan
