Every moment matters lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the phrase every moment matters written in three lines of flowing, hand-drawn script in black ink. The strokes vary in thickness and some have soft grey shading at the edges, suggesting a brush or pen lettering style. The text sits centred on a plain white background with no skin, body or other elements visible.

Sit yourselves down, the lot of you, before the bread goes cold. No, not you, Dennis, you'll have your speech when it's your turn and not a minute before. I'm going to tell you about my grandfather Walter, who painted signs for a living in Halifax, and who never once in fifty years let a letter leave his workshop unfinished.

He had a brush no thicker than a hair and a tin of black enamel he mixed himself on a Sunday. People came to him for shopfronts, pub boards and the names of ships. My mother said he could make a word lean forward as if it had somewhere to be. The winter he turned sixty-one, the Co-operative on Gibbet Street asked him to paint a single line across their new window: every moment matters. Nobody had asked for anything so soft. The manager said it was too fancy for a shop selling tinned peaches. Walter did it anyway, in three lines, the way you'd write to someone you were fond of.
He took a week over it. Ladder in the rain, breath smoking in the cold, going back over the downstrokes until they shone. The manager came round on the last afternoon and said, well, that's a lot of fuss for a window. Walter said, it's only fuss if you're hurrying. Then the fire came in the spring, the shop went up in the night, and the window was the only thing left standing, scorched at the edges and black-lettered still.
I've got the photograph on my kitchen wall, and his hand is in the corner, holding that tin. So here's what he told me, because it's the only advice worth having at a wedding. Don't rush the strokes. Lean into them. Now somebody fetch the bride's dad a drink, because he's crying again and I want to see the cake.
