Ribbon banner with wings and spectacles
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a tattoo design showing two curled ribbon banners carrying the text "don't worry, you're just as sane as I am". Between the banners sits a pair of round spectacles, with stylised wings spreading out on either side and a cherry with leaves hanging beneath. The linework is bold and uniform with solid black fills and no shading, set on a plain light grey background.

Mr Tobias Vane had fitted spectacles for forty years in the same narrow shop off Castle Street, and he had never once been asked to fit a pair to a cherry. So when Edith Thorne came in on a wet Tuesday with a bowl of fruit balanced on her hip and asked for lenses that would suit a cherry, he reached for the tray of wire frames without looking up from his ledger.

'Round,' she said. 'It needs to see the world round.'
He measured the cherry's bridge with a brass gauge, which took some doing, because the cherry kept rolling. Its stalk had a leaf on it, pale and pleased with itself. Outside, the gutters ran full and a tram clanked past the window like a slow argument.
'She's not mad,' Edith said, and tapped the counter twice. 'Mr Pell at the library said she was, and so did the vicar, but she doesn't need your opinion or mine. Just the glasses.'
Tobias ground the lenses that evening by the gas lamp, round as two pennies, and when he set the frames on the cherry they sat perfectly, wire wings lifting at either side. Edith paid in coins, counted twice, and at the door she turned with a grin. 'Tell them what she says,' she said. 'Don't worry. You're just as sane as I am.'
