Slytherin crest tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an ornate heraldic crest with scrollwork, a serpent design within the shield and the word Slytherin in a banner beneath it. The shading is smooth and the linework is bold, and the tattoo sits on the upper thigh of a person photographed from behind. Behind them, a crowd of people walks past a large castle model under a bright sky.

Ada had the sign half-lettered when Mr Greaves came down the steps with his hat in his hands, asking whether the serpent could be made to look less pleased with itself. She dipped her brush in the size of gold and didn't look up. 'It's a family crest, Mr Greaves. The serpent's meant to look pleased. It's the only thing on the shield that's been paid for.'

The shield had been carved over the chandlery door in 1811 and had been flaking since before her mother was born. Greaves wanted it back in the old colours: bottle green, a bar of silver, the scroll beneath running the words the firm had painted on its first ledgers. Ada had found the original scroll in a tin box under the counter, rolled tight as a cigarette and smelling of tar. Someone had written the motto in brown ink and underlined it twice, as if worried it might wander off.
She worked through the afternoon while gulls argued over the fish boxes. The serpent curled through the lower curve of the shield, its tail looped back to tuck under its own jaw. The trick, her father had told her, was to draw the body first and let the head decide where to go. When she reached the eye she hesitated, the way she always did with eyes. Greaves's grandfather had kept a dog with one white eye and a temper, and the old man had told her once that serpents watched harder than dogs did.
Greaves came back at dusk to inspect. He studied the shield for a long while, then the new gold eye, and said nothing at all. Ada wiped her brush on her apron. The serpent looked out at the street as if it had been waiting for someone to settle the bill, and for once it looked exactly as clever as the firm had always claimed to be.
