Small crown tattoo on a wrist

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black crown sits on the wrist, where the hand meets a dark sleeve. The crown is drawn in solid black ink with a simple outline, a row of points and a small cross on top. The soft, neutral background and pale nails keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The crown had hung on a nail behind the bakehouse door since the frost, and Nell Parrish had stopped seeing it, the way she had stopped noticing the smell of yeast in her own hair. It was a tin band no bigger than a thimble, blackened with soot, with five points and a little cross balanced on top. Her father had found it wrapped in a clean cloth on the path at the wood's edge, and he had said only that it was not theirs to keep.

On the last evening of October, when the rooks had gone quiet and the lane was turning to mud, Nell took it down and put it in her apron pocket. Her grandmother had told her the wood kept its own king, and that any crown found beyond the stile had to go back to the stump it came from before the first hard frost, or the king would come looking for his subjects. Nell did not believe in kings, but she believed in her grandmother's hands on the back of her neck when she told a story, so she went.

The stump stood where the beeches thinned, grey and split like a loaf. Brambles had grown across its face, and a fox watched her from the far side without any fear at all. She pulled the brambles back and found the hollow inside full of small things: a brass button, a thimble, a child's tin soldier, and a dozen crowns no bigger than hers, each one blackened and each one dented in the same careful way. Someone had been leaving them there for a very long time.

Nell set hers down beside the others. Then she stood a while in the cold, listening to the wood settle, and felt lighter than she had all autumn. When she got home her father was at the table with the lamp lit, and the nail behind the door was bare. He looked up, saw her empty apron, and said nothing at all, which was how she knew he had seen the stump too.
