Small anchor tattoo on a heel
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are photographed from behind, standing on a green textured carpet. A small black anchor, drawn with thin single-weight linework, sits on the back of the left heel. The background is softly blurred and the palette is muted, with warm skin tones against the grey-green carpet.

The stone anchors in the harbour at Ostia are older than the breakwater. Last month the divers brought one up with its flukes worn smooth as river pebbles, and the boy who carried their rope asked whether it had ever held a ship that wanted to leave. Nobody knew. I have enclosed the little bronze charm the smith made for you, a weight on a cord. Wear it under your tunic where the wet cannot reach it. If the sea gets too loud, press your thumb against the shank and think of the rope in my hands, twisted and tarred, going out with you.
Come home at the spring festival and I will show you the new stamp. I carved it small, so small you must lean close to see it, and I think that is how it should be.
