A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had turned before Nell Varcoe reached the slipway, and the boats were still out past the Mouse Rock. Her grandmother used to say the sea takes one thing from every harbour each year, and that whoever goes to fetch it back must carry a little iron anchor no bigger than a thumb, cut from the first hull the village ever lost. Nobody in Porthgwidden had seen that anchor in forty years. Nell had only heard about it from the old women who sat outside the chapel with their knitting.

She found it under the loose board in her grandmother's room, wrapped in oilcloth and tied with greened twine. It was black with age, and she pressed it into her palm until the corners bit. Her brother Jory had gone out at dawn with Tom Penhale, and the glass in the lighthouse keeper's window had been falling all morning.

She walked to the end of the quay, where the stone steps dropped into water the colour of slate. The saying was that you drop the anchor into the tide and never look back. She did as she was told. The iron went under without a sound, and Nell turned her face to the wall of the harbour and counted to one hundred.

When she turned round, the wind had dropped and two dark shapes were coming around the point, low in the water and steady. Jory was at the tiller, grinning like a fool, with Tom bailing beside him. Nell never told anyone what she had done. Her grandmother had always said that some debts are paid quietly, and that the old women would talk about it soon enough without any help from her.
