Matching small anchor tattoos on two ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two people's feet rest on a textured carpet, each with a small, simple black anchor tattoo near the heel. The anchors are drawn with clean, solid outlines and no shading, and the ink is black. The left ankle also shows a dark tattoo of a star or sun-like motif, while the right ankle wears several woven and beaded bracelets, and a sandal sits beside the left foot.

Dear Win,

The landlady at Mrs Pascoe's has finally given up on the bath plug, so I am writing this on the top step of the back stairs, where the light comes through the fanlight and the gulls can't reach. You will laugh, but I keep thinking about the afternoon we sat on the harbour wall with the tin of ink Dad left in the shed and argued about whether an anchor was too plain. You said plain was the point. I said nobody would know what it meant. You were right, as usual, and I have spent eleven years pretending otherwise.

Last night a man staying in the room above the dining room asked about the little anchor I'd had done, the one I always forget is there until the sand gets in the sandal strap. I told him it was for holding on to things, which made him look at me oddly, and I wished I had your gift for a better answer. Then he said his mother had the same mark, pricked into her in a tent at a fair in Margate, and she called it her ticket home. I didn't know what to say to that, so I passed him the marmalade.

I'm going to stop now before the bath is free. Mrs Pascoe has offered us the blue room for Sunday if we want it, and I have decided we do. Bring the bracelets from the biscuit tin, the ones you wove on the bus. I'll bring the shell necklace, and we can sit on the sea wall and let the tide decide where we go.

Love, Bea
