Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small anchor with a ring at the top sits on the side of an ankle. It is drawn with simple dark outlines and filled black sections, with little or no grey shading. The black and white photo centres the tattoo against plain skin with a softly blurred background.

Dear Tommy,

The lift has been broken since Tuesday, so I am writing this on the stairs between the fourteenth and fifteenth floors, where the window on the turn gives better light than anything in our flat. Mrs Okafor on eleven says the council will fix it when the pigeons get bored of the shaft. I have counted the steps. There are two hundred and six from the ground to our door, and I have stopped complaining about them, because you always said a sailor learns to climb anything.

Your last letter came from Rotterdam with a coffee ring on the corner and a little drawing of the anchor you scratched into the rail of your bunk. You wrote that the ring at the top is what the chain runs through, so the whole weight of the thing swings from something that can turn. I read that bit to Gran before she went to sleep. She said you got that from Grandad, who never once looked at a map he didn't need.

The ship is not due back until the autumn, the agent says, which means the autumn, of course. I went down to the chandlers on Dock Road to ask about a brass ring for the front door, because the one we have is cracked and rattles every time the wind comes up the stairwell. The man behind the counter wanted to know if it was for a boat. I said it was for a door that needed something to hold it still.

I'm posting this on the way down. Twenty-two floors is nothing when you're carrying news, and this news is only half good, so I'll manage it in one go. Keep the anchor steady.

Love, Nell
