Small anchor tattoo on the lower abdomen
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black anchor sits on bare skin just above the waistband of grey fabric. The anchor has a heart-shaped ring at the top and simple, even linework with solid black ink. The warm, close framing leaves the rest of the torso soft and out of focus.

The rope has been burning your palms since the Gravesend tide turned, and Aunt Isla is shouting from the wheelhouse about a lighter coming up on the port bow. You haul the bowline tight around the bollard, the way she showed you at nine, and the barge swings into the slack water below Tilbury with a groan of old oak.

Nobody on the Mary Ellen talks about the anchor. It hangs from a hook in the cabin, forty pounds of rust your grandfather dragged out of the Medway mud in 1956 and swore was lucky. Its ring is worn smooth, and someone long dead hammered a little heart into the iron above the shank, so the crew could tell whose hook was whose in the dark. You have always thought it looked like a question mark that had given up.
Tonight the fog comes up off the water thick as wet wool. Isla says the anchor will hold or it won't, and you should stop fussing with the lamp. You crouch on the foredeck and press your thumb against the heart, feeling the grit of a hundred years of paint. Then the lighter's horn sounds, close enough to rattle the rigging, and the chain runs out with a noise like a train of bells.
The barge stops. The fog thins to grey lace, and there is the lighter, near enough to read its name. You wind the rope back over your arm in three neat coils, and Isla, against all her own advice, laughs out loud. Anchors, she says, are only for keeping things where they are. You decide you have been holding still for long enough.
