Two small black anchor tattoos with heart-shaped tops sit on the ribs of two people side by side, and the right-hand anchor has a pink bow.

Small anchor tattoos on the ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

Two people's sides are shown in close view, each with a small anchor tattoo on the ribs. The left anchor is solid black with a heart-shaped loop at the top, while the right anchor is similar in outline but has a pink bow at its centre. The lines are clean and bold, and the background is softly blurred.

Dear Nan, the ferry has been stuck on the mud since Tuesday, so I have had time to think about the pair of us at the Dunmore slipway with a biscuit tin of rope ends between us. You always said an anchor was just a promise to come back to the same spot, and I told you that was daft, because the tide does what it likes. I am writing because I finally understand what you meant.

The heart on top is the bit that gets me. Mum drew it on the back of the chandlery receipt the week before you went north, and Dad, who never drew anything but tide tables, said the shank looked like a stapled letter. We laughed until the ink smudged. Nobody in the village would have guessed that a joke scribbled on a receipt would end up inked into two sets of ribs in a city parlour.

Your bow is the part I keep coming back to. Pink, because you said plain anchors were too grim, and I said a bit of colour never sank a ship. Yours went to London with the tattooist who had the good needles, and mine stayed here in plain black, because I was too stubborn to change my mind about anything.

Come home at Easter. The slipway has been rebuilt and the tide still turns at the same bell. I will hold the rope if you hold the bow.
