Nell had the ferry rope in both hands before the tide turned, and Ada was already on the far bank shouting that the chain had fouled again. The river at Holm Crossing ran brown and quick that March. For eleven winters the two of them had worked the boat between them, passing the hemp line back and forth so that it never once went slack.

Their grandmother had spliced the rope herself, one long loop with a figure of eight worked into the middle, and she made them promise never to cut it. Nell thought it was sentiment until the morning a coal barge clipped the cable and the line snapped at the wrong end. Ada caught Nell's wrist across the gap, and they held there, half in the water, until the men from the lock came running.

The new bridge opened in May. The council sent a letter offering to buy the crossing, and Ada read it twice at the kitchen table before she pushed it across. She had a cousin in Carlisle and a place in a bakery there. Nell said nothing for a long time. That evening they rowed out to the middle of the river with the rope coiled between them and sat until the lamps came on in the town.

In the morning Ada had re-spliced the line so the loop was closed on itself, with no ends at all. She said it was the only way she could think of to keep them both on the water. Nell tied the boat up at the old landing and went back to the house for the kettle. The rope still runs bank to bank, and when the river is high you can see it lift in the middle, where the two of them still meet and go round again.
