Small anchor tattoos on two hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands raise white takeaway coffee cups with black lids against a dark painted brick wall, the cups marked MR. and MRS. in red handwriting. Each hand carries a small anchor tattoo in simple grey outline, one on the side of a finger and one on the knuckle area. The shot is centred on the cups and hands, with even light and a plain background.

The gale had kept the boats in for three days, and Nell Teague had run out of patience with the gulls. So she spent the morning behind the harbour kiosk, marking takeaway cups with the red pen she kept for orders, and listening to the wind try the shutters.

Old Tobias Reed came up the slipway with his collar turned high and asked for two teas. His sister Ada was across the bay on the far pier, stranded since Monday with a borrowed rowing boat and no oars worth the name. Tobias could see her lamp from the breakwater each night, he said, and it had been going out earlier every evening, which meant her paraffin was running low.

Everyone in Gullhaven knew the old saying: whoever shares a cup on the quay in weather is tied to the other by an anchor, and the sea must hand them back. Nobody believed it, but nobody made tea without thinking it either. Nell wrote MR. on the first cup, then stopped with the pen above the second. Tobias raised his eyebrows. She wrote MRS. instead, and pressed the lid down hard.

"Put that on the sill for Ada," he said, and laughed the laugh of a man who had not laughed since November. The wind dropped at noon, all at once, the way it does on this coast. By two the boats were coming round the point, and by the time the lamp on the far pier flared up bright, the tea had gone cold in both cups. Tobias carried his to the window and held it up to the glass, and across the water a small lamp lifted in answer.
