Cat outline on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand holds a takeaway coffee cup with a black lid against a grey pavement. A small black tattoo of a sitting cat, drawn as a single thin outline with no shading, sits on the back of the hand. The photograph is greyscale, so the ink reads as black and the cup and background as neutral tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The broth carts stopped running to Tollgate the week the river rose, so I walked the last six miles with a cup of tea that had gone lukewarm in my coat. Its lid still bore the name of a shop from before the flood, and the sleeve showed a row of brick houses nobody had lived in for two hundred years. Tea was for the old, Mrs Ashdown always said, and she would only take it if I told her where I had got it.

She sat at the gatehouse window under a wool blanket, holding a pen with no ink left in it. 'Did you bring the picture?' she asked. I had not. I said I had brought the cup instead, and she laughed until she coughed. When she caught her breath she told me about her grandmother's cat, a grey thing that sat on the sill of a shop and watched the traffic as if it owned the street. Nobody had kept a cat in a ledger since the sea came in.

Then she held out her hand, palm down, and tapped the back of it. 'My nephew drew that with a biro when we were small. One line, never lifted. He said it was a cat waiting for the bus.' I looked closely. The cat was a single black curve: pointed ears, a tail wrapped round its paws, nothing inside it at all. It looked less like a drawing than a question someone had not finished asking.

On the walk back I saw the same outline sprayed in thin paint across a boarded-up door, and I stopped with the cold cup in my hand. I did not know who had made it. I only knew the tail still curled the way hers did, and that I had left the lid on so the tea would stay warm for whoever asked next.
