Mr and Mrs script on fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together in a close-up black and white photograph. One finger carries the script word Mr in black ink, and the adjacent finger carries the script word Mrs in a similar style. The soft focus and monochrome tones keep attention on the lettering and the folds of the skin.

The law of Auldreach said no subject could mark their body with a word the crown had not sanctioned, and the crown had sanctioned very little since the flood took the archive. So when Tamsin Ferrow came to my desk with a folded scrap of paper and asked me to letter two words on her hand and her husband's, I told her the law was older than my grandmother's hat and she should try the ferry-wives instead.

She came back at dusk with Oswin Thale, a ferryman with river-cracked knuckles who would not look at me. I had a bone nib from the bookbinder and a pot of lamp-black I used for the tithe ledgers. Tamsin held her left hand flat on my blotter and Oswin laid his right beside it, fingers folded in, so the two ring fingers lay touching at the second joint. I wrote Mr on his finger in the slanted hand my master taught me, and Mrs on hers, the tail of the s looping back toward the knuckle as if reaching for the other word. The needle bit more than the ink did. Oswin said nothing through the whole of it, but his thumb kept moving across the back of her hand.
By the next morning the ink had sunk into the creases and the words looked smudged at the edges, as though they had been written in a hurry. Tamsin said that was how she wanted them, because the lamp-black would wear away over a year and she would bring Oswin back each spring to have it renewed. I told her the crown would never allow it. She only smiled and asked whether I had entered the marriage in the register yet. I had not. I went to the cabinet, took out the ledger, and wrote their names across one line, with a small mark beside them where the two hands had touched.
