Small angel wings on adjacent fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small black wing tattoos are shown on the sides of neighbouring fingers, with the hands pressed together. Each wing is drawn as a dark silhouette with separated feather strands and some grey shading between them. The image is in black ink only, with a soft out-of-focus urban backdrop behind the hands.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the tent's down and the cold comes in under the flaps like a dog looking for scraps. You want the one about the Dwindle & Coyne Travelling Wonder? Good. Then mind me, because I will tell it once and the fire won't wait.

Last great season the big top still stood on the common outside Stroud, patched in six colours, and the flyers were the pride of it. Two girls from the ropes, Nell Harrow and her cousin Pip, who had hung upside down since they could walk. They never once took a net. The crowd believed the net was for show, and it was, but only because the girls had made a promise at the top of the rigging: when the bar left your hands, you reached for the other one, and whoever caught first had to hold on through the drop.

The season ended the way seasons do, with the wagons sold off and the ringmaster drinking his wages. On the last night, the tent half-collapsed in a wind off the hills, and Pip climbed the broken rigging alone to fetch the old bar. Nell stood below, counting. Nobody saw what happened up there. The ropes went quiet. When Pip came down, she held out her hand with the first two fingers crooked together, and Nell hooked hers around them without a word.

They say you can still see the feathers if you know where to look. I have never seen anything but skin. But I have watched those two old sisters press their hands together across a fire, and the flames leap up when they do.
