The snow had come over the top wall in the night, and by first light the lane to the lower barn was gone. Nell heard her father swearing at the gate before she saw him. She put the kettle back on the range, spooned the last of the coffee into the tin pot, and took the mug down from its hook, the white one with the chip at the rim that nobody else was allowed to use.

The men were at the drift with shovels, three of them, their breath going up in clouds. Her father did not stop when she came up the track. He took the mug in both hands without looking at it, and the steam climbed past his face and out over the hedge, thin and straight in the still air. Nell had seen that steam every morning of her life and never once thought of it as something that could be followed. The old sheepdog, Moss, sat down in the snow beside her boots and watched the cup as if it were a lamb.

When the mug came back empty, her father turned it over, shook out the last brown drop, and handed it to her with his thumb resting on the chipped rim. "Tell your mother the lane will be open by noon," he said. She said she would. Then she walked back down the track the way she had come, and the smoke from the kitchen chimney was already rising to meet her, the same thin line as the one above the mug. She thought the lane could wait a while.
