Small arrow tattoo on the side of the body
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single thin arrow pointing right runs horizontally across light skin, with a small triangular head and feathered tail. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black with no visible shading. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame with plain skin around it and dark fabric visible at the top edge.

Sit yourself down, lad, and mind the shavings. You'll never get a shaft true if you hold it like a cricket bat. Your grandfather cut this bow from yew off the churchyard wall, and I never told you that because the vicar would have had something to say about it.

The summer Dorrie Pell left Ashby Cross, she came to my bench with a single arrow under her arm. Thin as a pencil, with a goose feather dyed the colour of wet slate. She wanted it fletched for a shot over the fair meadow, where the bell-ringers keep a mark on the far oak. I asked her what she was aiming at. 'Nothing,' she said. 'I want to see how far it goes before it comes down.'
I shaved the nock, glued three feathers, and wound the cresting in red silk. She loosed it from the field wall at dusk. We heard it hiss over the hawthorns, and then nothing. No thud, no rattle on the slate roofs. Forty years on, a postcard arrived from Lisbon with one line of ink under the stamp: a plain arrow, pointing right, the way she always drew things.
Pass me that file, and hold the stave steady. Some shots don't land. They just keep going.
