Follow your arrow script with three arrows on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Three arrows run diagonally across the skin, each paired with a line of cursive lettering that reads Follow your arrow. The linework is thin and even, with small triangular arrowheads and feathered fletching drawn in outline. Only the arrowheads carry solid black or grey shading, and the tattoo sits against soft, slightly reddened skin.

Three orders had come in that week, all for the same bowman, a lad who wanted to shoot clean over the chimney pots of Saltgate and bring something back.

She cut the fletching in three shades of grey, because grey carries in the wet, and laid the arrows out in a row. The first she feathered tight and quick, the way she'd been taught. The second she left a shade loose so it would drift. The third she sat over longest, with the rain drumming on the shutter, and when the lad came for them at midnight she pressed it into his hand and said only, "Follow your arrow, not your nerve."
He laughed at her. Then he loosed the first into the dark over the rooftops, and it dropped into the black water below the Steps before the bell struck one. The second swung wide and clipped the weathercock on St Brannoc's, and the bird went spinning off its pin. The third he held a long while, weighing it, and then he drew.
It flew straight and low and steady, all the way to the lit window of the lamplighter's wife, who had been waiting up for him since dusk. Ada never told him that part. She only said, when the rain eased, that the arrow had known the way home better than he did, and that was the whole of her trade.
