A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had split the last of the goose quills before the lamp guttered, and the pile on the trestle looked like a row of unlit candles. Her father's knife was still warm from the whetstone. Outside, the dyke ice creaked where the wind came off the Wash, and someone was knocking at the chapel door for arrows, as if the whole parish had decided to hunt at once.

She took the shafts one by one, glued the feathers at a slant so they would spin true, and bound them with waxed thread. Her father had taught her that an arrow flies only as well as its tail, and that a head set crooked forgives nothing. Twelve for the contest on Lady Day. Twelve more for the boy from Holbeach who had come asking after a bow and paid in eggs.

The last shaft she did differently. She cut the head from the thin Swedish iron her father had kept in the chest under the window, bent it into an open triangle with no barbs to snag, and seated it so the point ran long and clean. Then, with a stub of charcoal from the hearth, she made two small marks beside the shaft, one for each night he had sat up with the shop lamp and said he was only tired.

When the boy came for the basket she gave him twelve and kept the last one back. "That's not for shooting," he said. "No," Nell said, turning it so the marks caught the light. "It's for knowing which way you're facing."
