Small bat tattoo on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with her hair in a ponytail and a dark tank top, showing a small solid black bat silhouette on the upper back beside the shoulder blade. The bat has crisp edges and fine internal detailing, and the rest of the image is in greyscale. The background is a softly blurred wall with a patterned texture, with the subject filling the left and centre of the frame.

Her son Tobiah did not believe in debts. He believed in lime wash and a tin of sulphur, and he spent a late August night on the orchard ladder swatting at the dark with a broom handle while the wasps came in to gorge on the windfalls. By dawn he had cracked two rungs and not a single wasp had died of it.
Mother Ashe made him sit on the step with a cup of cold tea and told him about the lord of the orchard who stripped the bark for his own roof, and how the bats came to take back the moths that were eating the blossom. A small black thing, she said, only needs to be cut true to be remembered. She pressed the cup into his hand. Sleep, she said. They will work while you rest.
He woke at noon to a quiet orchard, the grass beneath each tree strewn with fruit untouched by grub or hornet, and on the bark of the nearest pear, pressed flat in the shape of a folded wing, a dark little mark that the rain would not wash away.
