Small bird on a branch on the foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small, round-bodied bird with a red cap-like crest sits on a thin black branch that curves across the top of the foot. The bird has large pale eyes, a grey back and a soft yellow-orange belly, with a dark outline around the body and branch. The colour is applied flatly with light shading, and the design sits centrally on the foot against smooth, light skin.

Shift along and mind the drip off that awning, for the rain has been at it since Tuesday. I'll tell you about Pip, the round little finch who lived in the willow above Harrow Street market. He wore a red knitted cap his gran had made him, pulled down over his ears, and he had the widest, palest eyes in the county, because he was always, always surprised by something.

One wet Saturday the fishmonger, Dorrit Vane, hung her cod out to drip under that willow, and the gulls came down like bailiffs. Pip saw them coming, stared, and gripped his twig so hard his toes went white. The gulls took the cod, the cod took Dorrit's temper, and by dusk the whole market was a puddle with a wheelbarrow floating in it.

But Pip did not fly off. He had decided, somewhere between the cap and the branch, that a bird who notices everything ought to sit where he can see it properly. So every morning after, he watched the stalls from the willow, and every morning he was startled afresh by the price of herring.

Dorrit still sells her fish under that tree. When the rain comes in sideways and the gulls start circling, look up at the highest twig and you'll spot a small red cap, eyes as wide as saucers, keeping watch. Mind your change when you pay her. Pip always knows when you've short-changed someone.
