Small crescent moon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised, clenched hand with grey painted nails is photographed against a plain pale wall in black and white. A very small solid crescent moon sits on the inner wrist, drawn with a clean, thin black outline. The colour is monochrome and the composition is simple, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Dear Ada, the Marguerite has been three weeks out of Valparaíso and the glass has not moved in a day. Captain Hollis says the weather will come round by Thursday, but he said the same on Monday. I have the chart table to myself after the middle watch, which is the only quiet I get, so I am writing this by the lamp with my coat over my knees.

You will laugh, but I have started keeping the moon. Every night at two bells I go up and find where she sits, a thin paring over the port quarter, and I note the hour in the back of the logbook beside the sights. Mr Penrose thinks it is a waste of ink. Last night he stood beside me with the sextant and said a crescent is only the earth's shadow pretending to be something, and I said a lie told well enough is a kind of map. He did not answer, but this morning he left a tin of Cornish fudge on my bunk, so I suppose it counted.
Here is the thing I meant to tell you. The night before we cleared the Horn I could not sleep, and when I came up the moon was low between two clouds, thin as a clipped fingernail. I thought nobody at home was looking at that moon the way I was, and it made me want home more than any letter could. Then the cloud split and there she was, bright on one edge and dark on the other, her whole shape held in the black as if she had been waiting for someone to notice.
When we make port I am going to find the bosun's needle and ink and have her put on the inside of my wrist, where I can see her each time I take a bearing. Do not scold. I want something small I can keep, and something that will not sink.
