Three birds in flight on an inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small solid black bird silhouettes sit on the inner wrist, one larger bird flying above two smaller ones angled in the same direction. The shapes are filled rather than outlined, with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The photograph is black and white, with the palm raised toward the camera and a silver charm bracelet worn just below the tattoo.

Ada Pell had counted the cups on the dresser twice before the 7.40 ferry, and twice it came to three short of what the Seaview Terrace house needed for breakfast. Lodgers came in threes that autumn: two brothers from Hull and a widower who ate his egg standing up. The gulls on the chimney pot had started leaving in threes too, she'd noticed, lifting off together over the harbour wall as though someone had called them.

Her son Tom had rung from Newcastle on Sunday to say he wouldn't be coming back for the winter. She had not told the lodgers. She stripped the beds in the back room, folded the blue blanket that smelled of camphor, and found his old school atlas under the mattress with a pressed starling feather marking Iceland.
At six she went down to the pier with a heel of bread. The starlings were gathering on the rail, dozens of them, shifting like ink poured on wet paper. Three broke from the crowd and cut out over the grey water, one a little ahead and the other two close behind, and banked toward the lighthouse with nobody to tell them the way.
She tore the bread into three and threw each piece gently at the sea. Then she walked home and laid a fourth cup on the dresser anyway, because the kettle wanted filling and the house had always been built for more than it held.
