Small infinity symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a clenched fist raised towards the camera, with the wrist and lower forearm in view. A small, delicate infinity symbol sits on the wrist, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The background is soft and grey, and the fist is slightly out of focus, so the tattoo is the sharpest detail in the frame.

Keep your eyes on the knot, boy, not on my hands, they've told enough lies this winter. Your grandad taught me this one at Hallsea slip, a figure of eight pulled back through itself so there's no end to find. You never cut it. You feed it round and haul until it sings.

The Mary Ellen went out in the March squall with four men aboard and came back with three and a net full of rope. Nobody spoke about the fourth. His widow, Ada Penhale, walked down the shingle the next morning with his net bundled under one arm and asked me to mend the tear. I told her there was no tear, only a rope that had wanted to leave. She said mend it anyway.

So I sat on the upturned coble with her husband's twine across my knees, and I tied that endless loop into every knot I made. Hour after hour the gulls went over the harbour wall, and I kept thinking of him in the dark, his hand closing on the line, that clench that won't let go of anything it has once held. Ada watched my fingers the whole time and never said a word.

When I finished, she lifted the net and ran it through her hands, then closed her own fist on the rope and hauled hard, the way you would on a boat. The loop held. Not a single strand gave. She tied the spare end to the mooring post and said, let him find his own way in on the tide. The rope knows the road.
