A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kite had been caught in the larches since Tuesday, and by Friday the children of Holm Edge had stopped pointing at it. You were the one who went up. Your mother said the wood kept whatever it took, and she was right about most things, so you took the long hook from the bakehouse and a coil of tarred line and walked past the stile where the path forgets itself.

The bird was not a kite. It was a swift, or the shape a swift would make if someone drew one without lifting the pen: a single black thread for the wings, one loop for the head, and a tail that unspooled down through the bracken like a question nobody had finished asking. It hung in the crook of the oldest larch, wings spread flat as if the weather had pinned it mid-glide.

You tied the hook to the line and swung it once, twice, and the thread came free with a sound like a bow drawn across wire. The bird dropped into your palm, lighter than paper, and you realised the tail was still caught on the bark. When you looked back toward Holm Edge the chimneys had gone soft in the mist, and the path had grown a second branch you did not remember.

You carried it home folded inside your collar. Your mother took one look at the thread, said nothing, and hung it above the door where the morning light found it first. Every dawn after, the tail grew a finger's width longer, curling toward the trees, and she stopped asking you to close the door.
