Small black bird and cross on the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A side view of a person's neck and head, with a small tattoo just behind the ear. The tattoo has two solid black shapes: a dark triangular form resembling a bird in flight, and a smaller cross beside it. The lines are bold and filled, with no shading or colour, and the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame against light skin.

You learn the city by its rooftops after midnight, when the traffic thins to taxis and the gulls give up on the bins. Mr Okafor's pigeon loft sits on the flat roof above the chippy on Vine Street, and you have been told, twice, that the birds are not to be disturbed. You disturb them anyway. The one with the ragged left wing is called Tallow, and it drops from the gutter into your palm the way a coin drops into a till.

Its message is tied to one leg with red thread, a slip of tissue folded smaller than a fingernail. Someone in the flats across the canal wants to know if the cross on St Brannoc's is still up. Nobody has told them the church closed in the spring, that the roof came away in sheets and the bell rope hangs like a dead thing. You write the answer in pencil, the only word you can honestly give: yes.
Then you climb the scaffold, the planks slick with dew, and find the cross still standing, black against a sky the colour of old pennies. Tallow follows, wings clapping, and settles on the iron arm beside it as if it had always meant to be there. You wait while the cathedral clock across the river strikes two, counting the strokes on your fingers, and nothing falls.
At dawn you push the reply through the letterbox with the blue door, before the milk arrives. Somebody will read it with their tea going cold: still up. You don't mention that the bird did most of the holding.
