Small black cat silhouette on lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A tiny solid black silhouette of a cat walking to the right sits on the lower back of a person in a lilac top. The shape is a simple flat fill with a curled tail and no interior detail or shading. The warm, tanned skin and soft lighting make the black ink stand out clearly against the background.

You find the cat on the hydroponic deck of the Meridian Lantern, three weeks out from Ceres, sitting on a sealed crate of seed stock as though it had paid for the crate. Nobody aboard has seen a cat since the registry lists were culled. Its coat is the colour of the unlit corridors, and when it walks to the right, tail lifted like a question mark, the hull lights dim as if they too are trying not to startle it.

Ilse, the botanist, says it must have been smuggled in a grain sample twenty years back. Tomasz, who keeps the water books, says cats do not smuggle themselves. You say nothing, because you have been feeding it from your ration tray for four days, and it has begun to wait outside your sleeping cabin at each shift change, sitting exactly where the corridor light falls so you can see it from the far end.
On the sixth day the air scrubbers fail on the lower ring. Alarms ring through the decks in the flat voice the ship saves for bad news. People begin to move towards the sealed bulkhead. The cat goes ahead of you, unhurried, tail up, stopping every few metres to check you are still coming, the way you once walked behind someone you trusted.
The bulkhead opens onto a maintenance crawl nobody has used in years, and at its far end the old reserve tanks breathe clean air. You are the last through. When the seal hisses shut behind you, the cat is already on the next ladder, a black shape against the ring's grey, walking away as though the whole station had only ever been a place to cross.
