Small black mountain range on a wrist
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a jagged mountain range or peaked silhouette sits on the inner wrist, running across the forearm. The lines are bold and broken, with solid black areas on the peaks and thinner strokes at the edges. The tattoo is the only colour in the frame, set against pale skin, blue denim and a dark slate floor.

Some weeks the Sleeping Hare lay on its side like a hare that had given up. Other weeks it stood up on its hind legs and watched him come round the corner.

He told me once about a wet October when the cloud sat so low on the range that the peaks looked cut out of black card and pinned to nothing. A van had gone off the shoulder below the hairpin, and a woman from the valley farm stood at the verge with a torch that wouldn't stay lit. She asked him whether the mountains were still there, because she could not see them, and he said he could see them fine. He said they were the sharpest things in the county, jagged as a saw, dark as wet slate, and that she could hold on to them if she wanted. She did not understand him at the time. Years later she sent him a postcard of the same view in summer, with one line on the back: they are still there.
So when you ask why I never went over the top, that is the answer. I did not need the top. I only needed to know the line of them was where I had left it.
