A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox was back on the gatepost when Dora came down for her breakfast, sitting the way it always sat, tail curled round its feet as if the whole grey morning belonged to it. Mrs Halloran said it was the same animal that had taken a kipper off the back step in August, and she said it with the pleasure of a woman whose predictions about the weather had all come true that week.

Dora had taken the room at the end of the terrace in October, when the season was finished and the donkeys had been walked back to their stables on the front. She had nothing to do but wait for a letter from the solicitor in Hull about the boat her father had left her. Each evening she stood at the landing window and watched the fox face the water, ears up, never once looking at the house. It seemed to be waiting for something out past the breakwater too.

On the last Sunday she carried a heel of bread down to the gate and set it on the stone beside the fox. The fox considered it with one pale eye, then turned and trotted off along the wet sand toward the harbour wall, leaving a line of small prints that the tide had not yet reached. Dora followed as far as the slipway, where the prints went down into the shallows and stopped, as though the animal had stepped into the drawn line of a page and kept going.

The solicitor's letter came on Monday. The boat had been sold in the spring, and the buyer had painted over her name. Dora folded it small and went back down to the gate, where the bread was gone and a single dark feather lay on the stone, as fine and even as a stroke of ink. She tucked it into her coat and went to find out which way the tide was running.
