Black rose on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black rose bud sits at the top of a long curved stem with two leaves, on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The design uses bold black outlines and dark fills with little visible shading, set against smooth, lightly tanned skin. The background is dark grey, and the red top at the bottom of the frame gives the only other colour in the photo.

The bell had cracked in the November frost, so Brother Anselm rang the hours with a wooden mallet and prayed the sound would carry anyway. Below the cloister wall, the orchard had been stripped to its grey bones. Only the old rose by the infirmary door still held anything, one dark bud on a stem that bent toward the ground as if it had been listening for a voice.

Prior Edmund had forbidden the cutting of it. The rose was older than the abbey, he said, planted by a hermit who had died before anyone thought to write his name down. Anselm had never quite believed that. Roses did not survive three hundred winters without someone tending them, and someone had been tending this one in secret for a long time. Each morning, before lauds, a small pot of dark earth appeared on the step, and each morning the bud was a little closer to opening.
He caught the gardener at it on the feast of the Holy Innocents. It was Sister Ruth from the laundry, a woman with flour-white knuckles and no patience for explanation. She knelt with a trowel, lifting the stem in both hands the way one might lift a sleeping child.
"It doesn't bloom," she said without looking up. "It only waits until someone stops asking it to."
Anselm went back to the bell and struck it again, and for once the crack in the sound seemed to belong there.
