Small blue crescent moon on the chest
Chest · Colour · Photo
A small crescent moon is tattooed on the upper chest near the collarbone, with a blue fill that shifts from lighter to deeper tones. The fill has a fine speckled texture, and the edges are clean and solid. The moon sits alone on plain skin, with a white top and a thin gold chain visible in the frame.

The wedding was on Saturday.

She mixed the flux again at the bench, sifting the powder through muslin the way her mother had taught her, counting the stirs under her breath. The kiln ticked as it cooled. Outside on Clerkenwell Road the van men were shouting about a delivery that had gone to the wrong number, and somewhere above her a wireless played a dance tune that kept losing its way. She thought about the groom's grandfather, who had carried this watch through two wars and never once let it run slow, and she thought about how a moon was only a moon until someone decided it had to be exactly right.
At half past four the kiln door opened on a dial the colour of a tide pool at dusk, the blue deepening toward the rim, gold specks caught in it like stars seen through smoke. The crescent was clean at last. She ran a fine brush round its outline one final time, and it held.
She did not go to the church. She boxed the watch in cotton wool with a note that said only wind it at dusk. Days later a letter came back in a careful copperplate hand: he had wound it in the vestry before he could find his cufflinks, and the moon had come up bright and blue in the tiny glass, and it had kept perfect time all the way to the honeymoon.
