Small crescent moon on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon sits on the inner wrist, angled along the forearm. The moon is filled with dense black ink that fades to lighter grey along its inner edge, giving it soft shading. The plain light background and pale skin keep the focus on the small tattoo, with the hand visible at the top right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had counted the ewes twice before the lantern guttered, and both times she came up one short. The shed smelt of wet straw and iodine. Somewhere behind the hurdles a ewe was grinding her teeth, the low sound she made when a lamb lay the wrong way and she had given up arguing about it.

The moon had slipped behind the ash trees an hour since, leaving only a paring of light above the far field. Her father used to say a thin moon was the farm's own weather, that the frost came down hardest in the nights either side of it. He had said most things like that, half joke and half instruction, and she had stopped asking which half she was meant to take seriously.

She knelt in the straw, sleeves pushed past her elbows, and worked her hand in slowly until her fingers found a hoof and then a nose. The lamb came in a rush of heat and slime, and the ewe lifted her head and made a sound like a question. Ruth wiped the lamb's face with a fistful of straw and rubbed until it coughed and shook its ears.

When the ewe was up and nosing at her new lamb, Ruth went out to the gate. The sky had cleared. The moon was back, a fine curve no wider than a fingernail, and below it the frost had silvered every rail. She took a stub of chalk from her coat and made a mark on the gatepost, and the count came right at last, twenty-three, the number she had been waiting for. Then she sat on the cold step and waited for the light to come up over the hill.
