Small red rose on upper back

Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo

A small red rose on a slender stem with three green leaves sits on the upper back, shown in two side-by-side photographs. The linework is fine and the petals carry soft red shading, while the leaves use muted greens. A grey top and black bra strap frame the design against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have the cutting wrapped in a damp tea towel inside a biscuit tin, and the officer at the desk is asking you to open it. The stem is the length of your forearm, three leaves still green, one bud closed tight as a fist. Behind you the queue for the Harwick night ferry shuffles and sighs under the strip lights.

"Plant material," he says, reading the form you filled in twice. "Roses are permitted, provided they're certified." You tell him the nursery in Ghent gave you nothing but a receipt in purple ink, and that your grandmother's bush has been dead eleven years, which is the only completely true thing you have said since the car park. He lifts the towel with two gloved fingers. The bud has opened a little at its edge, a red so thin it looks wet.

He doesn't ask about the certificate again. He asks what colour it will be when it flowers. You say you don't know, because she never told you. She only ever said it would surprise you. He closes the tin, slides it back across the counter, and writes something on a yellow slip with a pencil that squeaks. "Keep it out of direct sun for three days," he says, "and don't let anyone tell you it's a weed."

You walk out past the sealed glass into the cold, the tin under one arm and the stem held upright in front of you like a lit candle. The wind off the water is sharp, and the thin red bud is already turning toward the lamps on the quay.
