Small butterfly on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small butterfly with shaded wings sits on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The black and white photograph is dimly lit with a dark vignette, and the ink reads as soft grey and black. The lace neckline of the top frames the tattoo, drawing the eye to the centre of the composition.

The bobbin-maker's daughter had spun grey thread all winter because the madder had run out in the valley, and the carrier who brought it up the pass had not come back since the first snow. So when the traveller's wife asked for a collar for her wedding dress, Ilse worked it in the colour of wet slate and ash, and the women of Hallenbach said it was a poor choice for a bride.

She finished it on the last night of November with the lamp guttering and her fingers numb. Each flower took three days. Each stitch she pulled tight with her teeth so the pattern would hold in the wind. When she bit off the last thread, a small brown moth had settled on the bench beside her, opened its wings once, and was not a moth at all but a butterfly with its wings shaded as though someone had sketched it in charcoal and forgotten to finish.
The carrier came up the pass the next morning on foot, half frozen, with a sack of red thread across his shoulders. He stared at the collar on the bench. Ilse told him the butterfly had come for the work, and he laughed at her until he saw the lace in the light, its edges lifting as if it breathed. He said the bride's mother would weep. Ilse said she would only ask for the thread back.
Ilse kept the red thread in a box and never used it. Each spring, when the snow on the pass went soft and grey, a single butterfly rose from her bench and flew up toward the ridge, and the village said that was where the thread went to be dyed.
