Angel wings across a woman's back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A monochrome photograph of a woman's bare upper back, with her long dark hair falling forward over one shoulder. A large pair of angel wings spans the shoulder blades, with feather detail built up through fine, layered grey shading and dark outlines. The soft, blurred white fabric behind the figure contrasts with the sharp tattoo detail and centres the composition on the wings.

Now sit closer, because this is the part my grandmother never told in front of the pickers. It was the last week of August, with the wind in the Bramley trees, and young Tobias Sallow went up the ladder under the Discovery row and saw something lying in the long grass. It was grey as wood ash and longer than his arm from wrist to elbow, twice over. You will want to know whether it was a bird. It was not a bird. A bird's feathers don't stay that colour after a week of rain.

He carried it down on his shoulders because nobody else would touch it, and it was cold as a well stone and hummed like a kettle a long way off. His mother kept the cider house at Hollin End and had seen a good many strange things come through her door, but she only folded her arms and said, put it on the trestle, then. She took her knife to the lower quill, the way you'd open a letter, and inside it was hollow and full of a soft white light, like muslin with the sun behind it. The light rose out through the open door and went up among the apple boughs, slow as breath on a window.
That autumn every tree in the orchard bore fruit with a faint silver bloom that wiped off on your sleeve, and the cider came out so clear you could read the price list through it. The wing itself was only feathers after that, and the boy kept them in a biscuit tin under his bed. On the first hard frost of the year he went out to the wall at dusk, and his shadow stood up long and dark against the bricks, and behind it, plain as anything, were two feathered shapes spread wide. He lifted his arms to see if they would follow. They did, and he has been holding his hands open ever since.
