A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time you reach the Sorrel Gap the mule has stopped arguing, and the wind has taken the last of the rain off the rock. Ahead, a single cactus stands on a shelf of grey shale, thin-armed, one branch bent up like a man hailing a cart. Nobody planted it and nobody waters it. The carter in Marrowby swore nothing grew above the cloud line on this side, and you have spent three weeks proving him wrong.

Your sister's letter is folded inside your coat. She wrote that the flower would open in the first week of June if the frost held off. She was right about the frost but not the date. The bloom is already there, five pale petals opening on the crown like a lamp someone forgot to switch off. You kneel and count the spines along the main stem, a habit she taught you, and stop at eleven because the wind keeps pulling your hair across your eyes.

You had meant to take a cutting. Instead you take out the knife, look at it, and put it back. You sit on a flat stone while the mule chews grass behind you. Far below, the valley is a sheet of cloud, and somewhere under it Marrowby is waiting for its post. For the first time in a long while you don't mind being late.

When you ride down at dusk you leave the cactus where it stands. The flower has closed for the night, folded tight against the cold, and the branch beside it looks, from the track, like a hand raised to say wait.
