Hamsa hand tattoo on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person with dreadlocks tied up in a bun is photographed from behind, showing a hamsa hand tattoo centred on the upper back below the neck. The design uses fine black linework with solid areas and dotted shading, filling the palm with an eye and layered floral motifs. The tattoo is shown in black ink only, set against bare skin and a softly blurred indoor background with a teal and warm colour grade.

Her husband, Tam, had scratched a small hand into the sill of the north window the winter they arrived, a shape he'd seen painted on a Cypriot fishing smack, and he'd said it would keep the evil eye off the glass. The lantern steadied, then came on slowly, past the teeth of the rocks, towards the slip where the lifeboat men stood waiting with their oilskins buttoned to the throat.
When the boat was tied up, the skipper, a boy called Lewis Ure, asked her whether the window was really cursed. She said no. She said it was only watching, which was what a good eye was for, and she climbed back up the stairs to keep the light lit until dawn.
