Small clover tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a four-petal clover or flower with a short stem sits on the inner wrist of a raised hand. The linework is thin and dark, with light shading inside the petals and no colour. The tattoo is centred on a plain, lightly lit background of teal and grey, with dark hair and painted nails visible at the edge of the frame.

The cook wanted it burned. He said a thing that old and that lucky would only bring the doldrums down harder on us. Mrs Oakes, who kept the stores and nothing else, called it a weed and the cook a coward. I said nothing. I had sailed with him six years and knew his fear was honest, and honest fear is worth more at sea than cleverness.

That night I sat at the chart table with a magnifier and a candle stub. On the back of the clover, in pencil no thicker than a hair, someone had written a date and a name: Tom, 1862, Loch Ryan. My own name is Tom. The hand was not mine. Some boy had carried this across an ocean and left it for the next Tom who needed to find something small and whole.

In the morning I pressed it back between the pages with the pencil side up. By noon a breeze came from the west, faint and cool, and the Harriet Lane leaned her shoulder into it. I did not tell the cook. I let him keep his fear, and I kept the luck.
