Infinity and arrow on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of an infinity loop with an arrow passing through its lower edge sits on the wrist. The thin, even linework is drawn in a single dark ink with no shading. The hand rests on a grey-lilac garment over a bare thigh, against a speckled pale tiled floor.

Dearest Maud, the abbot has finally let me back into the scriptorium, though he watches my hands the way a cat watches a sparrow. I am to finish the Psalter for Lady Wyvell's chapel, the one Brother Eudo spoiled with his careless ink last winter. Eudo has gone to the infirmary, and nobody will say whether he is mending.

This morning, in the margin beside the thirty-first psalm, I found a mark I did not make. It is a figure of eight laid on its side, drawn so cleanly I thought at first it was a printer's flourish from Lincoln. A small arrow runs through its lower loop, head pointing east, toward the window where the frost is thickest. Eudo always said the loop was a road with no end and the arrow was the pilgrim who refused to stop walking it.
I scraped it with pumice and it returned the next day, a little paler and a little further along the margin. Brother Cuthbert swears the brothers who read at matins have been tracing it with their thumbs when the office drags. I laughed at him, and then I stopped laughing, because on Thursday I caught my own thumb moving in the same loop while I was reciting the Gloria.
I have decided to leave it be. Tell Father the ink is good and the vellum is dry, and that I am eating enough. If the arrow ever points at the door, I shall know it is time to go out and find Eudo, and perhaps follow the road a little way. Your loving brother, Anselm.
