Small cartoon bee behind the ear
Other · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon bee is tattooed on the skin behind the ear, shown in profile with a rounded orange body, black stripes, a smiling face and outlined wings. The linework is simple and dark, with flat fills and no shading. The photo is framed closely on the ear, hair and gold hoop earrings, with the bee sitting on the open skin to the right of the ear.

The bee came in through the window of Ward 7 at ten past three, which is the hour when nothing in a hospital is supposed to happen. Sister Okonedo had gone to the dispensary and left me with twelve sleeping children, a trolley that squeaked on its left front wheel, and a moth the size of a biscuit circling the lamp. Then the bee arrived, buzzing like a tiny outboard motor, and settled on the drip stand beside bed four as though it had booked.

Eight-year-old Priya Nair woke, saw it, and murmured that it was smiling. I looked, and it was. Someone had drawn that bee with a round orange belly, three black stripes and a face made from two dots and a curve, its wings like a pair of soap bubbles. It looked as if it had wandered out of a colouring book and was rather pleased about it. Priya named it Mr Buzzington and asked whether bees got tired of flying at night.
I fetched an empty specimen jar from the cupboard, meaning to be sensible, but the bee walked onto my sleeve of its own accord and sat there cleaning its face with both front legs. Mr Buzzington rode with me to the sluice, to the lift and back again, while Priya explained the rules of the bee kingdom in a voice that could have filled the whole ward. By four o'clock the corridor lights had turned the grey of early dawn.
At half past six I opened the window at the end of the corridor, and the bee went out into the car park as if it had only been visiting. When I checked Priya's chart before handover, I found my own handwriting at the bottom: temperature normal, spirits high, bee seen. Nobody on the day shift argued with that.
