Red flower behind the ear
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a red flower with five petals and a darker centre sits on the skin behind an ear, with a metal piercing visible on the upper ear. The petals are shaded with deeper red tones along their edges, giving them some depth. The tattoo is the only colour in an otherwise natural skin-toned close-up of the side of the head.

The Kessler Brothers' fair pulled into the field above Hollin Bridge on the Tuesday, four days late, with one of the gallopers wrapped in tarpaulin like a sick horse. Mam sent me up the bank with a tin of pins and told me not to bring back the rain. I found Dolly Pike on her knees beside the generator van, rolling red crepe paper petals between her thumbs.

She made flowers for the coconut shy. Five petals each, cut from the same red sheet, with a dab of black ink at the middle where the card showed through. Ten pence a bunch, she said, and nobody ever bought one. 'Fair folk don't buy flowers,' she said. 'We get given them, or we don't.' She pressed one into my palm and it was already damp from her hands.
The storm came on the Thursday. The big wheel groaned to a stop and the generator coughed and died, and the lights went out along the midway one by one, like someone walking down a row of candles. In the dark I heard Dolly laughing at something in the caravan. When the power came back she was gone, the rest of the show was loading out before dawn, and my flower had gone soft and dark at the edges where the rain had got into it.
Years later I saw a flower like hers painted on the side of a caravan in Margate, the rim shaded deeper so it looked lit from inside, and I thought of the tin of pins. I still have the crepe one. It never dried properly, and it keeps its red better in a drawer than it ever did in a summer field.
