Fine line black and grey tattoo of a small bunny with long ears and a shaded round body, with trailing dots, placed behind a person's ear on the neck.

Small bunny tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a bunny sits on the skin behind the ear, showing two long outlined ears above a round body with soft grey shading. A short trail of small dots runs diagonally down and away from the figure. The photograph is a close, slightly angled view of the ear and neck with a gold hoop earring and a pink hair clip visible, and the tattoo is the clear focal point against the skin.

The tide has taken the sea wall again, and the boats in Porthgwidden lie on their sides like tired dogs, so you go down to the slipway with a sack of bread and find the hare sitting on the bottom step as if it had been expecting you. Its ears are long and inked black at the rims, and it is round in the middle, soft grey where the light has pooled on it, the way fog sits in the harbour mouth before breakfast.

"You have been slow," it says. Hares in this town talk only to people who owe them a favour, and you do not remember owing one, which is how you know you do.

It hops down onto the wet weed and sets off across the flats. Every few strides it stamps, and where it stamps a small dark dot stays behind on the sand, then another, then another, a line of them leading out past the breakwater towards the place where the lighthouse keeper's rowing boat went missing in March. You follow, because following is the only way to get the bread back to the boatyard before the gulls find it.

The dots lead to the boat, upright and dry, its oars shipped neatly. In its bottom board lies a silver key on a red thread, and beside it a note in your grandmother's hand that says only: the hare keeps the tally, you keep the sea. You pick up the key. Behind you the dots begin to fade, one by one, as the tide comes back in to read them.
