A tiny, solid black silhouette of a seated cat, with its tail curling to one side, sits on the skin behind the ear. The cat is shown in profile against pale skin, and the ear dominates the right of the frame.

The Halloran Brothers' Travelling Marvel had one trick left in 1931, and it wasn't the knife-thrower. It was a black cat who would sit still on a velvet cushion while the ringmaster murmured into the ear of the girl who sold the peanuts. Nobody knew what he murmured. The girl, Winnie Dacre, swore it was the names of towns the company would never reach.

Winnie left at the end of that season with a carpet bag and a debt the brothers wrote off as a kindness. The cat stayed. Every night after that he sat on the pole-step and watched the empty benches, his tail curled round his paws, facing the road she had taken as if he expected her to come back and ask him something.

So when the last caravan rolled out in the spring, the old ringmaster carried Ash up the lane himself and set him down on the verge where the sun was warm. Go on, then, he said. Tell her we kept the tent up as long as we could. The cat didn't move, and that was the last anyone saw of him.
