Small cat silhouette behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of a seated cat sits on the skin behind the ear, with its tail curling to the left. The shape is filled in with uniform black ink and has no shading or internal detail. The black and white photograph is taken close up, with the ear and hair framing the small tattoo.

The cat had come aboard at Gravesend with no name and no owner, and by the third week out nobody could say whose it was, only that it kept to the stern. Tobias Hale, the second mate, had stopped trying to shift it from the taffrail. Every evening it sat in the same place with its forepaws tucked under and its tail curled to the left, black against the grey water like a shape cut from card and pinned there to watch the wake.

On the nineteenth night the glass fell fast and the wind came round hard from the south-west. Men ran for the halyards in the dark, shouting numbers at each other, and Tobias went aft for the lantern from the binnacle. The cat had not moved. It sat with its face turned to the port quarter and its ears up, and when he followed its gaze he saw a single white light low on the swell, a ship showing no lamps he could put a name to.
He bawled the course change and the Mercy Fenwick came round just as the squall struck, close enough that the other vessel's spars swung past within a cable's length of their rail. By dawn both ships were still afloat, and the white light had gone out somewhere astern. Tobias found the cat on the taffrail exactly where it had been the night before, tail still curled, the salt drying on its fur.
He did not try to move it. He poured the last of the cook's cream into a tin lid and set it down beside the cat, and the cat, which had never once asked him for anything, began to drink.
